It's that time again! Time to listen to Cary's Christmas songs!

( Completely amazing and totally bizarre )

When I was home visiting my parents a couple weeks ago, I saw a listing in the paper for one of the local no-kill animal shelters. There were pictures of some of the featured animals up for adoption. One of animals pictured was a cat named Cary Grant. After I composed myself from the laughter, my mom says "Well, he does kinda look like him." To which I replied "No he doesn't! He's a cat! They just named a cat 'Cary Grant' to get suckers like me to adopt him!"

And it almost worked. If I didn't already have a 3-legged cat and a dog on expensive prescription food and meds for bladder stones (both adopted, btw. Pet adoption FTW!) that cat would be mine.

I really hope someone takes him home. It makes me sad knowing Cary's in a cage.

I find it interesting that TCM isn't showing The Bishop's Wife a million times this holiday season. Last year I think it aired at least 10 times throughout November and December. I don't know if it's because they are giving it a rest or if they lost the rights to it.

Anyway, if you get a chance to catch Talk of the Town I highly recommend it. Great movie with Grant, the amazing Ronald Colman, and the lovely Jean Arthur. And Walk, Don't Run is a great movie as well. One of my favorites. It was Cary's last movie. It's a remake of The More the Merrier, starring Jean Arthur, Joel McCrea, and Charles Coburn (with Grant in the Coburn role).

Anyway, hope everyone has a wonderful December and Happy Holidays!

Today I found a lovely photo of Cary, his third wife Betsy Drake, and some soldiers at a military hospital in Korea. The couple frequently traveled and during these trips they would make stops at hospitals to visit wounded soldiers. This would have been perfect to post last week for Veterans' Day.

This week's reviews feature Pretty Boys Who Can Act. They have to look good, at least starting out, but they also have to not rely on those good looks in lieu of learning to act. In other words, they have to be actors who happen to be pretty, not models in actor drag.

It occurs to me that I've never attempted to define acting here. My definition of acting is the ability to create and portray a different character than the actor, and to effectively convey that character's thoughts, emotions and actions so that the viewer believes in the creation as separate from the actor. (This eliminates from all my discussions Clive Owen, who has said that he doesn't believe emotions are part of acting. Sorry, Clive, you're boring to watch; why should I spend the money?)

Anyway, the first day's pretty boy, who never lost his charm or his looks or his style: ( with some photos, so be warned )

One film I'd like to point out on this list is None But the Lonely Heart. If you haven't seen it, Cary gives one of his best performances so do check it out. Highly underrated film. It was one of the two times he was nominated for an Academy Award. Unfortunately he never won a competitive Oscar. It wasn't until 1970 and a whole lot of campaigning (mainly on the part of then Academy President Gregory Peck...love the Peck!) that he was awarded an Honorary Oscar.

Also for those of you who have Turner Classic Movies, November's Star of the Month is Grace Kelly. They are scheduled to show some documentaries about her life and on becoming Princess of Monaco, which I'm sure will have footage of her wedding etc...As we all know Cary and Grace were incredibly close friends. We might get to see some nice footage of the two of them together. ;)

I'm in the mood to hear a little Mae singing today. I stumbled across this clip of I Want You, I Need You from I'm No Angel (1933) someone so graciously uploaded over at Internet Archive.


After the first track, there are two other Mae songs, btw. My Old Flame and Pardon Me for Loving and Running. ;)

I will also say that if you haven't seen In Name Only, I highly recommend it. It is an underrated gem. They rarely show it on TCM, so this is a real treat. It is being shown as part of a birthday tribute for Carole Lombard. If you don't get TCM, try your local library. It isn't on DVD, but you might be able to find it on VHS. It's just a really sweet film.

This is an excellent video someone put together of all the special effects used in Bringing Up Baby. Some of them you might recognize, but if you're like me you'll be surprised with most of it. It's really amazing what they were able to do then. Oh, and the Baby puppet cracks me up.

In an effort to get things started here, I thought it might be nice to have everyone name their favorite Grant performance and why. He made so many great films (and some not so good ones...*cough* The Pride and the Passion *cough*) that I know it is hard to pick just one.

But let's say you were stranded on an island and could only take one of his films (and you would be able to take other films with you, but only one Grant selection. I thought I would throw that in there. Because there is no way I could live on an island with only 1 movie, Grant or no Grant. You know, maybe 5 movies total. *giggle*)...which one would it be?

My pick would be (and if you know me this is ABSOLUTELY no surprise) Notorious. I think Cary completely stepped out of his realm to play the character of T.R. Devlin, a man who is so tormented--something Cary had not done before. He is perfect in that role and each time I watch it I feel differently toward Devlin; sometimes complete hatred and sometimes absolute pity. Such a complex character. Ah! Hitchcock did wonders with Cary.
